Why Dilip Kumar never married Madhubala
Last week, the gorgeous Madhubala was immortalised when the Indian government released a stamp in her name. We spoke to her youngest sister, Madhur Bhushan, who gave us a closer insight into Madhubala's life, her romance with Dilip Kumar, her unhappy marriage to Kishore kumar, and her illness. Madhur, whose real name is Zahida, is nine years younger than Madhubala. Out of 10 children, she is one of the four still alive. Over to Madhur:
On Madhubala's entry into films
My father, Ataullah Khan, was working in the Imperial Tobacco Company in Peshawar, Pakistan, when he lost his job and decided to come to Mumbai. Madhubala was seven at that time. Her real name was Mumtaz Begum. We called her Mazliappa, as she was the fifth child. My father started looking for a job. He also took Madhubala to film studios. She got work in Basant (1942) at the age of nine.
The leading lady's name was Mumtaz Shanti, so Madhubala was called Baby Mumtaz, when she was a child actress. She got her first break in Kirdar Sharma's Neel Kamal. Kirdar's wife was supposed to play the lead role but she passed away. As Madhubala knew the dialogues, she became a heroine at the age of 13. From this film onwards, she was credited as Madhubala. The film did not do well, but her work was appreciated. Madhubala shot to fame in 1949 with Mahal. She was 16. At that time, no one realised that she was sick, not even my father. Madhubala was a healthy child, and very bubbly.
'Madhubala was not ready to believe that she was sick' On Madhubala's illness
Madhubala first vomited blood when she was in Chennai shooting for S S Vassan's Bahut Din Huwe (1954). She was treated, and she resumed shooting. Nobody thought she was sick until she fainted on J K Nanda's sets while shooting with Raj Kapoor on Chalack (1957). The film never got completed. That's when the doctor said that she had a hole in her heart. She was 24 then. She was advised bed rest for three months, but after a month of rest, Madhubala resumed work. Looking at her, one would not say that she was sick. She, herself, was not ready to believe that she was sick.
Her last film was Mughal-E-Azam, which released in 1960. People think that she worked after that too, but that's not true. She had completed all her films in the 10 years that it took for Mughal-E-Azam to be made. Some movies released after she was bedridden but she was in no condition to work after Mughal-E-Azam. In fact, in some of the scenes, you will notice that she looks pale and sick.
'Madhubala's father never allowed her to attend movie premieres' On her family
People say that my family knew she was ill but we did not treat her; that we hid this fact from producers to get work. But there was no technology back then to check whether she had a hole in a heart, so how would any of us know? We came to know only in 1957. After three years, she went to London for treatment. But it was too late. Madhubala died after nine years.
Everybody blamed my father. But he was protective about his daughters since his sons had died at the ages of five and six. He was an uneducated man but he was like Madhubala's manager. He took care of her work but never interfered on what films she should take up. He never allowed Madhubala to attend movie premieres because he felt overexposure would kill her career. He always wanted fans to crave for her.

'She loved Dilipsaab till the day she died' On her romance with Dilip Kumar
The reason Madhubala broke up with Dilip Kumar was B R Chopra's film Naya Daur, not my father. Madhubala had shot a part of the film when the makers decided to go for an outdoor shoot to Gwalior. The place was known for dacoits, so my father asked them to change the location. They disagreed because they wanted a hilly terrain. So my father asked her to quit the film. He was ready to pay the deficit.
Chopra asked Dilip Kumar for help. Dilipsaab and Madhubala were engaged then. Dilipsaab tried to mediate but Madhubala refused to disobey her father. Chopra's production filed a case against her, which went on for a year. But this did not spoil their relationship. Dilipsaab told her to forget movies and get married to him. She said she would marry him, provided he apologised to her father. He refused, so Madhubala left him. That one 'sorry' could have changed her life. She loved Dilipsaab till the day she died.

'Kishore Kumar was not a good husband' On Madhubala's marriage to Kishore Kumar When Madhubala fell sick and was planning to go to London for treatment, Kishore Kumar proposed marriage. My father wanted her to wait and get a clean chit from the London doctors first. But Madhubala married Kishore Kumar out of stubbornness, and anger towards Dilipsaab. They got married in 1960. She was 27 years old.
Once the doctor gave his verdict -- that she would not live for long -- Kishorebhai brought her a house in Mumbai's Carter Road and dumped her there alone, with a nurse and a driver. He would come once in about four months to see her. He did not take her phone calls. Kishorebhai was madly in love with Madhubala but once she returned from London, he dumped her. He was not a good husband.
Madhubala was very depressed because no one came to meet her. Once upon a time, she was hot property in the industry. But when she was bedridden and dying, not a single person met her. Also, she could no longer dress up. She was in night gowns most of the time. She died at the age of 36.

Madhubala's Life
That gives such great details with the whole story. For all this time, I thought it was Madhubala's father who declined the marriage of Dilip & Madhubala, but it was only over quitting a movie!
I would have came to visit her -- sick or not; she is my favorite actress.
madubala's life...
its a very intricate story actually. and after reading it, i can understand the amount of pain it must have felt. she was an amazing actress in the movies made. though her life took a twist nd became one of those movies that no one really can understand unless directed.
its amazing how her beauty nd talent was no where compare to the life she could have had nd the life she got... a great loss is still remembered..
I just discovered the
I just discovered the actress while trying to know better the actor Dilip Kumar. I can better understand why Dilip was called king of trajedy; the glow in the eyes of madhubala for him must be haunting him even now!
She'll Always be Remembered
Its indeed very sad that such an epitome of beauty had to fade away in this manner. Wish she was born during this time when her ailment could be treated so easily. Anyway, she will always remain in our hearts and remembered for her work. May her soul rest in peace.
Great Actress
She was extremely beautiful and immensely talented. What today's films lack are actresses like Madhubala. A great tragedy she died at the young age of 36. She could have been the "Queen of Hearts" had she lived longer.
Fine Lady
To me, nothing is better than Madhubala performing Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya. She has all of these expressions that ripple across her face during that song, some only last for a fraction of a second. So focused. So spirited. Sometimes I wonder if the light was shining on her or coming out of her. She was amazing, and I thank the author here for putting this article together about a lady we know so little about.
Madhubala's family misused
Hi All.
This lady is expertly shifting the blame from her father. But the truth is obvious. The family fleeced her, because she was the golden hen, wasnt she? The sad part is that they destroyed her chance of a happy married life with the one man she loved, Dilip Kumar. Its easy for us to scandalize film star's lives. But I feel its really unfair on them.
Madhubala and Dilip Kumar truly loved each other from my extensive research, and Atuallah Khan expertly spoiled the chances of their happy marriage.
Shame on this lady here to be disputing this.
All is fair in love and war
Whilst I am not disputing what,Madubala jee's sister is saying. But can anybody explain to me why it would be necessary for Dilip sahib to apologise to Madubala jee's father when it would be Madubala jee,who would be spending the rest of her life with Dilip sahib.I feel, like everyone, that it is a sad ending to a match made in heaven.
It breaks my heart to watch
It breaks my heart to watch a movie with Madhubala and Dilip Kumar, I feel this so deeply my inside is falling apart especially when she looks at him if, in the movies which is a job that calls for certain emotions that make great movie stars. But to actually know that this once in a lifetime feeling can be destroyed by selfishness. I love Dilip with part of my heart and love them both with all my heart, my greatest regret is that they didn't have a child, but that was a different time their child would have been that of the most beautiful pair in the world. Why hasn't he gone to visit her grave site or go to her funeral or see her when she was sick. He still loves her and always will even to this day, he loved her then, he loves her now and always will love her until he dies, even after that,if there is life after death. That is "amar", the eternal love story if they had gotten married it would have been, "Ram and Sita", story in todays life, how he must have hurt her?????
Not fare from any body excpt madhubala
kabhi kabhi parents apne bachcho ke liye kuch aisa achcha karrahe hote hai, jismein unke bachche ke liye kuch bura hota hai. Aur ghalti se kuch ghalat steps parents se bhii uth jate hain. After all parents bhii to aam insaan hii hote hain. Har insaan apne liye best possible step hii choos karte hain, lekin hamesha subkuch achcha hii to nahi hota, its just bcoz no simple human knows the future. By the way jo bhii huwa ghalatb huwa, wese ghalti Dilip sb ki bhi hai agar woh ek sorry bol dete to kuch ghis nahi jaate. After all woh madhubala jii ke father hii to the koi gher to nahi the, log pyar ke liye najane kya kya karte hain unse ek sorry nahi bola gaya. Ghalti Dilip sb ki bhi hai. Aur rehi baat kisho ki, to woh to saala tha hii harami, uski to baat hii chodh do.woh to nanga tha saala,Tuchcha.
The one who suffers knows what pain really feels like
No matter what we all say, but she was the one to suffer and die a lonely death.
Any ways this teaches us how real life is; there was a time when people paid anything to watch a glimpse of Madhu Bala, but ironically no one came around during her sickness.......
Despite of Dilip kumar being named Bollywood's "TRAGEDY KING", Madhubala lived real life of a "TRAGEDY QUEEN".
However Dilip saab should have cooled down a bit and amended the mess.
MADHUBALA
THIS MAKES ME SO SAD THAT I JUST WANT TO WEEP. TOO BAD SHE LET HER FATHER CONTROL HER LIFE SO MUCH. HAD SHE MARRIED DILIP KUMAR, SHE WOULD HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE BEFORE SHE DIED. I WISH DILIP KUMAR HAD GONE TO SEE HER WHILE SHE WAS ILL, LONELY AND DEPRESSED. IT WOULD HAVE MADE A DIFFERENCE TO HER.
LOVE NEVER DIES
Madhubala was a legend and never dies, she still lives in our heart as if still alive. But her past is very hurting, the only one love she crave never visited her, I know how it feels especially during her dying days how she wish she could just for once see the love of her life for the last time. How that eyes would had shied so many tears waiting for her true love to return. I don't understand what love was that of Dilip that he never understood, what kind of love was pouring for him then, and the deep meaning of being in love. True love never live with hate but forgiveness and caring for each other. Was it too much of weight to carry, just to forgive n forget and carry on your life with only one word LOVE. Was this too much to ask. What a pity a true legend went tru such a life, wish Dilip would have understood the deeper side of her feeling and merge as one soul. The father is equally to be blame thinking of her earning and not her desire to live happily. Wish he could have given more taught to his daughter's inner feeling. May her soul rest in peace. She will always remain in our hearts.
Dilip Kumar did go to see her when she wasn't well
Her sister would obviously take her father's side the truth is her father ruined her life when it came to dilip.
Friends i too felt for a long time why Dilip didn't visit Madhubala, untill i read in this biography and the only reason i bought it was because in the beginning it had references of dilipji's comments about her.
It said only a few people met her before she pass away. Dilip Kumar was one of those few people. After she was married to Kishore kumar it didn't work out and she came back home, and Dilip kumar said even in her final stages she looked attractive , and they had sorted there differences out, and they met quite occasionally, so friends its not all bitter as you think Dilip so her and she requested when she gets better can he do a film with and he told her yes and that there is nothing wrong with her.
Sounds like he was in denial of her illness and till this day doesn't talk about her as its far too painful. It was really heartbreaking to read this but atleasr we all know that they loved each other till the end.
I have a website dedicated to their love, those who felt strongly about them come visit.
