US Immigration officials have arrested more than 750 foreign nationals, including Indians, in one of the largest such enforcement action carried out so far in the country.

Most of the arrested during the week-long raids in five southland counties of Los Angeles area were Mexican nationals but the list of those picked up were from 14 nations, including India. The group comprised two foreign murder suspects and more than 150 immigration fugitives.

As a part of the operations, Office of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers also looked for criminal aliens incarcerated in local jails and took custody of some 423 previously unidentified deportable foreign nationals who were scheduled for release from jails in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties.  read more

Washington: At a time when the US Congress is to re-examine immigration issues, President George W Bush has made a strong case for increasing the H1-B visa quota, emphasising that it makes "no sense" for America to not allow an Indian scientist to come to the country and develop new technologies.

Speaking in Delaware at a Dupont facility, Bush said, "It makes no sense to say to a young scientist from India, you can't come to America to help this company develop technologies that help us deal with our problems. So we've got to change that .. change that mindset in Washington DC."  read more
